  • 1.  Voice Quality Issue - Static

    Hello,

    I have multiple users complaining that when they are talking to someone from outside the County, whether it's long distance or local, they hear static sometimes if they both start talking at the same time. Static also occurs when they blow, tap or scratch the mic - occurs with handsets of 9640, 9611 and wireless headsets.

    This issue does not occur internally, ext-to-ext.

    Any pointers? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    Hi Kristen,
    Can you describe your external trunking?  TDM?  SIP?  

    I'm assuming SIP trunking.

    When the static occurs during the blow, tap, scratch events, are those also exclusively external calls?

    Hello Tom, we have PRI trunks. We are in the process of moving over to SIP trunks with Centurylink with their Voice Complete service.

    The static occurs ONLY during the blow, tap, scratch events on EXTERNAL calls.

    Have you checked your DS1 performance counters and your Clock Sync?  To me it sounds like a dirty circuit.

    To show ds1 performance for the last 24 hours:
    list meas ds1 log DS1BoardLocation (01a10 or 1v2 for example)

    To show clock sync your command will be similar to below
    sta sync

    or maybe sta sync media-g x

    Please call your PRI carrier repair number.  You can run a test against the DS1 card and post them here, too.

    Tom, thank you so much. I've opened a ticket with our carrier, Centurylink. The issues do seem to be occurring only at the building where I see the SES.

    We've also been having weird voicemail issues - lots of jitter when I trace the voicemail TAC. I left multiple messages for someone at the building where this circuit is and there was a male voice faint in the background while I spoke, and in one message it was like he was with me they said! Loud and clear! A bit creepy! Interestingly though, I had called a DID on that circuit with SES and left the messages.

    I ran a test of the board:
    ds1 test 1

    ds1 test 2

    ds1 test 3

    Good luck with your PRI, Kristen.  I suspect if your voicemail issue is only with this site it may clear up when the PRI is cleaned up.  If not, you can check with your network team regarding the jitter issue.  If you need more help from people here in the technical forum, please post some details about which voicemail system you're using and how it's positioned/connected within your network.  The fewer assumptions people have to make, the better the suggestions will be.

    Thank you, Tom! I ran a list measurements ds1 log today on that same board and now today it's 100% clean.

    We're thinking that something new we implemented, Varonis, is taxing our network and possibly causing these issues. I'll post separately if I need help with Voicemail issues. Thanks again!

    It's more likely that Centurylink quietly fixed your issue.  Security software isn't likely to impact T1 performance.
