Using those older devices should work, but just a few things to keep in mind:
- Older cell phones and iPods tend to have a much shorter battery life. Esp. if they are connected on WiFi.
- Watch the OS level and patches... Once they go off manfacture support, they tend to not get OS updates, which may prevent them from getting patched versions of Avaya Workspace, etc. Also, security folks don't always like unpatched devices out there on the network.
Take a look at the WiFi phones from Spectralink. They have a "smart" WiFi device that runs Android and will get OS patches for a while. It's also hardened so it's a lot more durable than standard iPhones or Android devices. They also have a "feature phone" which is a real easy transition from the Avaya 3641 device. It's SIP enabled and a super sturdy phone. It's also waterproof, weather proof, etc...

I was asked to replace our Avaya 3641 wifi handsets if possible, for as cheap as possible. I was thinking of getting some older model iPhone or Android mobile devices and downloading Avaya Workplace to them.
