  • 1.  VLAN Assignments for Softphones

    Posted 03-05-2021 08:50 AM
    Hi,

We have large set of users on One-x Communicator Windows client in H.323 mode, to which I want to assign them to a specific Voice VLANs as we have dedicated network for voice traffic, currently Soft-client users are complaining for bad voice quality as there traffic is going on data network and I have no means to route the specific voice packets from PC to voice vlan,

Please suggest me for this case.

Unfortunately, that is kinda the nature of VLANs.  Each PC can only have one connection to one*.  That PC will either live in the data VLAN or the voice VLAN, but can't live in both.

Do you know the real reason that there is voice quality issues?  Is it because of congestion on the network?  If that is the case, then something like QoS on the data network will help out.  If it is for some other reason, then another VLAN won't help out in the slightest.

** Technically, PCs can participate in multiple VLANs, but applications won't know where to send the traffic.  Some NICs and OSs allow for VLAN tagging, or to ignore all VLANs and process all traffic.  This used to be limited to Linux and Windows server operating systems, but you can jerry-rig this into consumer OSs.  But, there will be no benefit, since the path you are running on will really be the same.
