    Posted 07-01-2021 07:48 AM
    Dear All,

We are planing to migrate 2000 Plus H.323 phones (96xx and J Series) to SIP phone. Aura 8.1 environment.
Please share some of your experiences in doing so, what are the steps which I should follow and the caveats which I should take into prior considerations. Any document on this topic would also be helpful.

Note - Always consider pilot testing before making such big move.

    1. Need SIP OPTIM trunks between CM and SM (try using port 5070)
    2. Update private numbering table for PPM
    3. Update off-pbx-station table
    4. Update CM station form with correct set type
    5. Build CM OPTIM SIP entity and entity links
    6. Define 5070 listening port on SM SIP entity with endpoint checkbox
    7. Add CM as a managed element on SMGR and synchronize it
    8. Build SIP user profile
    9. Build application sequencing for AST and PPM features
    10. Build 46xx settings file with SIP options
    11. Flash pilot group phones wit SIP firmware

    Important 46xx settings parameters:
    SET SIG 2
    SET SIPDOMAIN lab.mydomain.com
    SET SIP_CONTROLLER_LIST <SM01-SM100>:5061;transport=tls,<SM02-SM100>:5061;transport=tls
    SET ENABLE_PPM_SOURCED_SIPPROXYSRVR 0
    SET SIMULTANEOUS_REGISTRATIONS 3
    SET FAILBACK_POLICY auto
    SET SIPREGPROXYPOLICY simultaneous
    SET MEDIAENCRYPTION 1
    SET TRUSTCERTS slamonRootCA.crt,smgr-tmdefaultca.txt

    Arslan,

It's been almost four years since you posted this question. I assume you figured out how to convert your 2,000 phones from H.323 to SIP.  In classes, this is a question I am frequently asked. Consequently, I have spent hours searching unsuccessfully for an answer. So, how did you do it?

Specifically, how did you convert/upgrade the users' accounts in CM from H.323, AND create the corresponding SIP account?

(Because this is Arslan's post, I address the question to him.  But this is an open question for the whole Avaya community.  There has to be more than one way to solve this problem.)

I think it's worth noting that there are 2 aspects to a move like this:

    1) the Creation of all the SIP Profiles in System Manager

    2) the Actual migration of the handsets and changing logged in H.323 handsets to SIP (ideally re-logged back in as the correct user!).

In my experience, both aspects can be painful, and i don't have a complete answer, but something worth considering for aspect 1 is bulk imports via SMGR imports, and for aspect 2 you could investigate a tool like OnCents (just google it).

    That's my 2 cents worth :)

    Hi John,

Thanks for bringing this up. We had put this exercise on hold due to the tedious process involved. Currently, any new phones or sites added to the system are SIP-only, resulting in a mixed environment.

Additionally, we recently integrated MS Teams with SBC via Direct Routing, and employees are happy with the setup. That said, your step-by-step method will definitely be helpful if we decide to proceed with this conversion in the future.

I recently went through this process after I upgraded the system. I have a mixed environment of J179 and 9611g. AURA 10.2

Project was to convert 9611 H.323 to 9611SIP, specifically for the move to IPv6. I went a more manual route due to the sensitivity of the users and button needs and be as least intrusive as possible to the populace. I used SLAMon to pull all device MAC addresses and create a list of phones out there by sub-net. I used chatGPT to help me create <MAC>.txt from excel files with random passwords and correct username so I can auto login the devices when they rebooted and upgraded. Uploaded that in AADS/Utility server. Updated DHCP scopes I was working on daily and added SIG=2 to the 242 option string. Fully zero touch. Created the user in SMGR and rebooted the phone by busy and release the H.323 phone in CM. Since the phone takes about 7 mins to upgrade, after the reboot, I went into CM and changed the profile to 9611SIP and updated the SIP trunk parameter to the OPTIM trunk, fixed buttons and set half screen. I completed the project in a couple months and doing on average 50 phones a day. About half my day.

I used SLAMon to watch phones come back up as it was nicer then watching Session Manager registrations

It was a very long process and painful but this was the best approach as approved by the customer. Plus changing 9611CC to 9611SIPCC required additional work as there are a few changes to their processes that needed to be dealt with.

    Hope this helps!

    Jamison,

Thank you for this level of detail. I am impressed by your cleverness!

Please correct me if my summary is wrong.

    Preparation for Handset Migration

Use SLAMon to get list of all H.323 phones, their MAC and their IP

Create <MAC>.txt for each phone, containing SIP User Name and Password

    Uploaded those files into AADS-Utility

    Uploaded SIP firmware onto AADS-Utility

    Preparation for Server Migration

In SMGR, for all users create their SIP User profiles and assigned CM Application Sequence

(Ignored error message about CM endpoint)

Migration (done on a per-subnet basis)

For the targeted subnet, modify DHCP Option 242 to SIG=2 (SIP)

In CM, Busy & Reset one H.323 endpoint

While that phone is rebooting & converting to SIP firmware, change its endpoint model to SIP and update its trunk parameter to the OPTIM trunks (and make other appropriate changes)

Then start migration of next H.323 phone with a Busy & Reset…

Confirm successful migration by monitoring them in SLAMon.

(BTW:  Michael Mason--Thanks for your post, too!)

Yes...but I did forget to mention the below to the 46xxsettings file so the phone knows to look for the txt file...If the phone does not find the file then the phone will come up to the login screen and either you can remote log it in or have someone touch it. Also...if the phone is manually set to H.323 it will not change. Had a few phones set that way plus the J179's that were hard coded to H.323.

    ## GET $MACADDR will request for the "MACADDR" file from the HTTP/HTTPS Server where "$MACADDR" which will be replaced by the telephone's MAC address.

    ##  Note: This parameter is supported by J129 SIP  R1.1.0.0, J169/J179 R1.5.0, J100 SIP R2.0.0.0 and later, J139 SIP R3.0.0.0 and later, J159 SIP R4.0.3.0 and later, J189 SIP R4.0.6.1 and later,

    ##   96x1 SIP R7.1.1.0 and later and Avaya Vantage Devices SIP R2.0.1.0 and later

    GET $MACADDR.txt
