  • 1.  Overhead paging in office w no Media Gateway

    Posted 04-28-2020 01:57 PM
All, we have a remote office where we do not have any telephone network equipment on site (no Media Gateway); the users get their phone service over our WAN, and the only telephone equipment we have on site are their 9611 desk phones (h.323).  We are currently looking for options of overhead paging for this office, as they now are large enough that they feel the need.  Anyone have any suggestions?
We are currently in the Avaya 7.0 environment, but are moving to the R8.x environment shortly (in the middle of the upgrade project as this is being typed).
We have a SIP circuit installed at our primary server location (not in production yet, but for testing, can be brought into prod if needed), and a good WiFi network on site in the office in question
Any suggestions are welcome, we want to explore what's out there.

    Thank you kindly,
    Cathy

There are paging speaker that register as SIP endpoints. Do a web search for SIP speakers. The ones I've seen are PoE so (if you have PoE switches) you don't need any power supplies, amps, paging adapters, or gateways.

Great, thanks, will explore that.  I forgot to mention that we do have a partial SIP environment, currently serving any remote worker users, and some SIP endpoints already for on-prem use.  Appreciate your response.

    Cathy,
One thing to consider is not all SIP Paging interfaces support High Definition audio codecs, which may improve overhead paging quality.  This is one of my wish list items for when I tackle this problem, hopefully next year.

I can recommend Algo equipment.  There's a number of ways to engineer an Algo system.  We've used the 8301, which registers as a SIP station and provides 600 Ohm output for a paging amp.   That output could also be used with self-amplified speakers.   That's old-tech though.  If you're installing all new, using IP-enabled, POE-powered speakers might be the way to go.  Those generally work by having one device that registers as a SIP station and then uses multicast to send audio to all the speakers.

I like the Algo 8301, too.  I've got one at my desk, which is currently inaccessible.  :-(
