  • 1.  SDM Client w/ VMWare

Looking to find out if anyone else has been or attempted to use Solution Deployment Manager when upgrading CM, SM, etc. on VMWare.  We have been experiencing a ton of issues with the client from the FQDNs not populating properly, certificates not being recognized, and options being grayed out.  We have been working with Tier 4 who identified some of the issues as "bugs" and we are working on testing a beta version of the new client and still seeing issues.  We have gone ahead and are just doing our minor upgrades via CLI but if SDM is supposed to make things easier going forward I question if it is really only meant for AVP although the documentation states otherwise.

I wonder if others out there are seeing issues or those that are on VMWare just aren't bothering to use it and opting for CLI.  It took a long time to get attention to the issue which is odd if they are bugs that we would be the only ones experiencing issues.

Just curious to see what others have found or experienced.

    Hi Nicole,

We gave up on SDM after having similar issues on vmWare. We initially could not get it to recognize a valid vmWare license, once we finally got that figured out with Avaya's help, we had many of the issues you describe.

We finally gave up on SDM after speaking to other BPs and customers, who also had issues with it. We found that most people still are using the CLI. The biggest issue we had in trying to complete upgrades was that in many applications you must have root access to apply the upgrade, even in SDM. In Aura 7, Avaya did not give root access unless it was specifically requested on special forms and you could justify your need. We feel it is too cumbersome to get it to work seamlessly.

We are moving to Aura 8 soon and will see if there are any improvements. I will let the group know if I find any ways to make it work better once we go to Aura 8.

    Kind Regards, Richard

Thank you for your reply Richard!  That is what I expected and somewhat hoped was the case. We are so far down the road now we will keep testing with Avaya but good to know we weren't the only ones.  My BP has stated that with CM8 you can enable 'root' again but with VMware only if you deploy it from SDM versus any of the VM tools.  We are a bit out from our CM8 upgrade so please do share your findings.

    Thank you again!
    Nicole
